African American Studies Minor

African American Studies

The African American Studies Minor orients students toward examining African American life, history, and culture through interdisciplinary methodologies and multi-disciplinary courses. While grounded in humanities fields such as history, literature, and the arts, the minor also introduces social scientific approaches in ways
that center both African Americans’ daily experiences and Black scholarly works in celebrations of Black communities, life, and society.

Students will develop critical thinking, reading, and problem-solving skills as they study Black life from a variety of vantage points. The minor will help MHU students of all races and backgrounds prepare for the world of work in an increasingly multi-racial and multi-cultural United States, and the minor will compliment most humanities and social science majors, helping students:

  • develop understanding and broad knowledge of the culture, history, and social movements of peoples of African descent in the United States.
  • demonstrate an understanding of how diverse identities and socio-economic contexts intersect, particularly as they interact with structural relationships between race and power.
