Master of Arts in Criminal Justice

Prerequisites

For those individuals who have completed a four-year degree from an accredited institution, there are no prerequisites. There are no restrictions related to the discipline associated with the completed undergraduate degree.

Admission to the Program

All applications for the online Master of Arts in Criminal Justice program are considered ready for review after the materials listed below have been received by the Adult and Graduate Studies office:

• A completed application form.
• Official transcripts of all colleges and universities attended.
• Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university.
• Two letters of recommendation (at least one of which must be from a current or former university professor).
• A brief essay (700–1000 words) that addresses why the applicant is interested in the MACJ program, as well as their motivation to complete the degree.
• Minimum GPA of a 3.0 is required although the program may also approve admission by reason of special backgrounds, abilities, or interests.

Admission Deadline

This program has rolling admission, that is, no specific deadline. Note that it may take 4-6 weeks to receive transcripts and process an application

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Application Checklist

1. Online Application. 

2. Letters of recommendation. May be emailed to sarah_burnette@mhu.edu in a PDF or Word document format. 

• Traditional applicant: Two letters of recommendation (at least one must be from a current or former university professor who is familiar with you and your work ethic.
• MHU student/4+1 applicant: Two letters of recommendations, OR three letters of recommendation (in lieu of personal essay [see below]). At least one letter must be from a current or former university professor.

3. Personal essay with statement of goals. May be emailed to sarah_burnette@mhu.edu in a PDF or Word document format.

In a 700–1,000 word, well-written statement, the candidate should discuss the following:

• Why do you want to enter the Mars Hill University MACJ program?
• How is the program related to your career goals?
• What motivates you to complete the program?

4. Official college transcript(s) from all colleges or universities attended. May be mailed or sent through an approved digital transcript service to sarah_burnette@mhu.edu.
