Laura Steil earned a B.S. in mathematics from Samford University in Birmingham, AL in December 2005.  After that she completed a M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Kentucky-defending her dissertation in 2011.  Dr. Steil joined the faculty of Mars Hill in August 2011.  During the 2011-2012 year, she was a Project NExT fellow.  In this program of the Mathematical Association of America, Dr. Steil attended national meetings focused on developing skills in being an effective educator of undergraduate mathematics.  She enjoys teaching many levels of college math-ranging from Finite Mathematics to Number Theory and Senior Seminar.  In particular, supervising students’ senior projects in topics ranging from Math and Music to Cryptography to Baseball and Statistics during the senior seminar class is one of her favorite teaching experiences.  She is the chair of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department.  Dr. Steil also serves as the faculty sponsor for the Mars Hill chapter of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society.  This Honor Society invites the top ten percent of the junior and senior classes to be members.  It is open to all disciplines and the National Convention is a great experience for faculty sponsors and students alike.  Her personal interests include knitting, attending musicals in the region, and singing in choir at her church.
