President Floyd’s Retirement Message to the Mars Hill Community

To my Lions and the Mars Hill University Community,

After much thought, prayer, and reflection, I am writing to share with you my decision to retire from my role as President of Mars Hill University on May 31, 2026.

This decision was not easy, as my years at Mars Hill have been the most meaningful of my life. However, recent personal circumstances have led me to recognize that it is time for me to turn my attention more fully to my family. Over the past year, both of my parents have experienced declining health, multiple hospitalizations, and a tough move into an assisted living community. Dad died on September 3. Being over four hours away from them during periods of medical emergencies has been unmanageable at times and I feel deeply called to support Mom in this new chapter of her life. She has devoted her life to taking care of me and my sister.

At the same time, we have been blessed with the arrival of two beautiful grandchildren and another one is due on September 21. They bring Terry and me great joy, and we want to be fully present for them as they grow.
Professionally, this also feels like a natural and appropriate time. We are nearing the successful completion of Phase 1 and 2 of our campus renovations and the completion of the Mars Hill University Campus Center project—a transformative step for our students and the entire community. I believe the university is poised for continued success. I have full confidence in our faculty, our staff, our coaches, and our leadership team to carry this momentum forward with strength and vision.

Serving as your president has been the honor of a lifetime. I am deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me, for the work we have accomplished together, and for the relationships that I will carry with me always. Mars Hill is a special place—rooted in mission, guided by faith, and filled with people who care deeply about one another and about making a difference in the world.

I will work closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure a smooth and thoughtful leadership transition. In the meantime, know that my heart remains fully with this institution and that I will always be proud to be a Lion.

With gratitude,

Tony Floyd, J.D.
President, Mars Hill University

Dear Mars Hill University Community,

Since joining Mars Hill University on June 1, 2018, Tony Floyd has been an integral part of our institution, leading with an unwavering commitment to the mission statement of Mars Hill University. Under his leadership, we have weathered challenges and reached new heights that once seemed out of reach. Tony’s contributions have left an indelible mark on Mars Hill University, and we are profoundly thankful for his service. We also want to recognize his wife, Terry, for the many ways she has supported Tony and shared in his commitment to Mars Hill. Together, they have given so much to this community, and we are excited for them as they step into their next season of life.

As the Board of Trustees begins the search for our next president, we will be looking for someone who can help guide Mars Hill into the future and build on the important work that Tony has begun. We are confident that through a thoughtful and thorough process, we will identify a leader who will serve our community well and position Mars Hill for continued strength and success. We will keep you informed throughout this process and welcome your input and support.

Please join me in extending heartfelt thanks to Tony for his remarkable service and in wishing him every success in the future.

Sincerely,

Brent Townsend
