Face Jug/Pottery Workshop

April 23 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Come spend the day getting your hands dirty and creating! Renowned potter Jim McDowell will walk students through creating their very own face jugs. We’ll break in the middle of the day for a fabulous soul food lunch. The workshop is free, but space is limited, so please reserve a spot here. FOR MARS HILL STUDENTS ONLY.

Learn more about McDowell here and here.

Face jugs are a part of Southern African American artistic tradition (in Appalachia and elsewhere in the South) and there is a rich and varied folklore related to them. McDowell, whose “four-times Great Aunt Evangeline” was a potter in Jamaica, says, “I make my face jugs to honor my people who came to this country in bondage through the Middle Passage and not only survived but thrived…I pay homage to Civil Rights activists and Freedom Fighters…”
