Election Cake: First Fridays at the Museum

November 04 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Come by the museum between 5 and 8 as part of downtown Mars Hill’s First Fridays. There, you’ll get to sample some “election cake.” What is election cake, you might ask? Well, it is a naturally-leavened cake that originated in colonial New England and has historically been associated with election times. Dr. Maia Surdam, a food historian and part-owner of OWL Bakery, will be on hand to discuss the history and meaning behind election cakes. It is also a perfect complement to the current exhibit, Sharing Responsibility for Our Future: Activism and Voting Rights in Appalachia, well as our very own November election time!
