Profile of 2018-19 Student Body

As of the official census date (October 1, 2018), the 2018-19 MHU student body included 1154 students; 1036 are traditional students, 94 are AGS undergraduate students, 22 are graduate students, and 2 are dual-enrolled students.

The Fall 2018 Traditional Student Body:

  • Includes 715 continuing students, 264 new students, 46 transfers, and 11 returning after non-enrollment
  • Includes 500 men (48%) and 536 (52%) women
  • 33% are students of color (20% African-American, 6% Hispanic, 1.8% Asian, 1.6% American Indian, and 4% two or more races)
  • 68% are from North Carolina, 27% are from 33 other states, and 5% are from 18 other countries, including Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Guatemala, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Trinidad, United Kingdom, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe.
  • 18% hail from Madison, Buncombe, or Yancey counties
  • 42% are first-generation college students (6% are unknown)
  • 98% receive financial aid
  • 44% are participating in athletics
  • The average total SAT score for new students is 1030 (based on the 2016 SAT scale)
  • The average high school GPA for new students is 3.55
