Profile of 2017-18 Student Body

As of the official census date (October 1, 2017), the 2017-18 MHU student body included 1277 students; 1130 are Traditional, 129 are AGS undergrads, 14 are AGS graduate students, and 4 are dual enrolled.

The 2017 Traditional Student Body:

  • Includes 701 continuing students, 353 new students, 63 transfers, and 13 returning after non-enrollment
  • Includes 530 men (47%) and 600 (53%) women
  • 36% are students of color (19.6% African-American, 4.7% Hispanic, 2.7% Asian, 1.8% American Indian, 3.9% two or more races, and 3.6% unknown)
  • 72% are from North Carolina, 23% are from 30 other states, and 5% are from 17 other countries, including Australia, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Trinidad, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe.
  • 19% hail from Madison, Buncombe, or Yancey counties
  • 52% are first-generation college students (6% are unknown)
  • 98% receive financial aid
  • 41% are participating in athletics
  • The average total SAT score for new students is 1012 (based on the 2016 SAT scale)
  • The average high school GPA for new students is 3.39
