History Class Hosts Veterans’ Reception

Veterans History ProjectHistory Instructor Patrick Cash and students in his public history course hosted a reception April 25 in Bentley Fellowship Hall in honor of all Madison County veterans, and especially those who took part in a recent public history project to record veterans' memories. The students have conducted numerous interviews during the spring 2016 semester.

Madison County veterans honored at the reception included: Bernard Briggs, Bacchus McPeters, Hubert Briggs, Rotha Wilson, Jim Utterback, Leah Hill, Matthew Griffin, David Pressley, Chris Ledford and David McKinney, Robert Kiggins, Russell Burleson and Marvin Thomas. They are pictured above with students Ian Kirkpatrick, Adrianna Enoch, Brittany Jenkins, Jennifer Cardona and Cadence Wilmoth.

Three of the veterans in attendance - Bacchus McPeters (Navy), Hubert Briggs (Army), and Rotha Wilson (Navy) - were in active duty during World War II.

All interviews conducted at MHU will be donated to the Southern Appalachian Archives, as well as the Genealogy Room of the Madison County Public Library in Marshall, NC. Interviews with war veterans from World War I, World War II and the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars will qualify to be donated to the Library of Congress's Veterans' History Program (VHP).

The interview project at MHU this semester were a joint effort of the history department, the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at MHU, and a number of community partners, including Mars Hill Baptist Church and Madison County Veterans Services.
