Army Field Band to Perform at Mars Hill University

Army Field Band03Mars Hill University will host an exciting and inspiring performance by the United States Army Field Band and Soldiers' Chorus in Moore Auditorium on October 23, 2014, at 7:30 pm. The event is part of the university's Presidential Lecture and Performance Series.

The performance is free and open to the public, but tickets are recommended. Tickets are now available online and (beginning Tuesday, October 14) at the MHU bookstore, on Main St. in Mars Hill, from 9 am until 4:30 pm each weekday and on most Saturdays from 11 am until 2 pm.

The Concert Band is the oldest and largest of the Field Band's four performing components. This elite 65-member instrumental ensemble, founded in 1946, has performed in all 50 states and 25 foreign countries for audiences totaling more than 100 million. Tours have taken the band throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Far East, and India.

In addition to formal programs, the Concert Band has participated in numerous presidential inaugural parades and supported many diplomatic missions overseas.

The Soldiers' Chorus, founded in 1957, is the vocal complement of the Field Band. The 29-member mixed choral ensemble travels throughout the nation and abroad, performing as a separate component and in joint concerts with the Concert Band.

The musical backgrounds of Soldiers' Chorus personnel range from opera and musical theatre to music education and vocal coaching; this diversity provides unique programming flexibility. In addition to presenting selections from the vast choral repertoire, Soldiers' Chorus performances often include the music of Broadway, opera, barbershop quartet, and Americana.

The components of the Army Field Band, together and separately, aim to be "musical ambassadors of the Army." Through their concerts, the Field Band fosters the support of the American people for members of the armed forces and supports diplomatic efforts around the world.

Dr. Dan Lunsford, president of Mars Hill University, said, “We are honored to have been chosen to host the US Army Field Band and Soldier’s Chorus at Mars Hill University. This group is known for providing a high quality performance that will be both an educational tool and an uplifting experience for our students, particularly those involved in Mars Hill's own excellent music programs. We are thrilled to be able to offer that experience not only to our students, but to the public as well."

The Presidential Lecture and Performance Series complements Mars Hill University’s emphasis on the liberal arts by bringing distinguished and knowledgeable individuals to lecture on a wide range of topics and to provide high quality performances in the cultural arts.
