Mars Hill University Hosts Former Governor Jim Hunt for the University Lecture Series

Mars Hill University will host a lecture by former North Carolina governor James B. Hunt, Jr., on April 15, 2014, at 3:30 pm in Moore Auditorium. Hunt’s lecture, titled “The State of Education in North Carolina,” will be the second event in the University Lecture Series, which is in its inaugural year. Admission is free.

Hunt was the state’s longest-serving governor, having been elected to four terms, from 1977 to1985, and from 1993 to 2001. Long recognized as an advocate for education, he was an early proponent of teaching standards and early childhood education.

Hunt’s lecture will come at the end of a semester in which Mars Hill University has hosted several events focused on education-related themes. Three of those events were tied to the Spring 2014 Citizenship Series, which will conclude on April 9 with a lecture from N.C. State Superintendent of Public Schools June Atkinson.

Governor Hunt holds a B.A. and an M.A. from N.C. State University and a J.D. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also holds honorary degrees from over a dozen colleges and universities. He is currently a member of the Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC law firm in Raleigh.

“Mars Hill University is honored to have Governor Jim Hunt as the next presenter in our University Lecture Series,” said President Dan Lunsford. “The governor is recognized nationwide for his dedication to improving educational opportunity as well as raising expectations for student achievement. As a former public school educator myself, I have seen first-hand the governor’s advocacy and support for education in the state at all levels.”

According to Lunsford, the Mars Hill education program is one of the institution’s largest and most active major groups. “Since Mars Hill became a senior college in the mid-1960s, it has educated untold numbers of educators who are now classroom teachers, administrators and academicians at all levels throughout the region and even the nation. Welcoming Gov. Hunt to our campus is only the latest episode in that culture of respect for education that exists here at Mars Hill.”

The Mars Hill University Lecture Series brings distinguished and knowledgeable individuals to the university campus to lecture on a wide range of timely and timeless topics which complement the university’s emphasis on the liberal arts.
