Rep. Susan Fisher Speaks at MHU

Susan Fisher03“Women in Politics” was the title of a talk given by North Carolina Representative Susan Fisher at Mars Hill University on March 20.

Fisher, who spent part of her college years at Mars Hill, represents the 114th district (Buncombe County) in the NC House. Her speech is part of Mars Hill’s celebration of Women’s History Month. She said she was glad to be back at Mars Hill, “where I found out that I could do anything I want to do, if I wanted to do it.”

Fisher quoted heavily from the The Shriver Report, a non-profit media initiative promoted by author and journalist Maria Shriver. The Report documents societal trends and transformations in American life, and their impacts on women.

She cited statistics which showed that, compared to men, women tend to be paid less for the same jobs and underrepresented in political positions, and yet they are increasingly better educated and increasingly responsible for breadwinner positions in the family. Such statistics, she said, mean that our society still has work to do in attaining gender equality.

Fisher recommended that MHU students avoid the pitfalls of inequality in society by focusing on their educations before having children, and by backing laws which close the wage gap, support education and support voting rights.
