Nine New Members Inducted Into Mars Hill University Honor Society for Adult Students

Mu Kappa Lambda, the Mars Hill University honor society for nontraditional and adult students, inducted seven new student members and two honorary members at the end of the spring 2017 semester. New student inductees are Annette Kathleen Austin, a nursing major from Waynesville, North Carolina;Tammy Robinson Baldwin, a social work major from Leicester, North Carolina; Katrina Boings Dodson, a nursing major from Marshall, North Carolina; Celisa M. Glenn, a business management major from Mills River, North Carolina; Brittney Nicole Hopson, a nursing major from Spruce Pine, North Carolina; Kenya Ayanna Miles, a social work major from Swannanoa, North Carolina; and Stephanie Dawn Stroupe, a social work major from Burnsville, North Carolina. Honorary inductees are Barb Sims, criminal justice professor; and Heidi Sermersheim, site coordinator for the university's Asheville Center for Adult and Graduate Studies.

University President Dan Lunsford was the keynote speaker for the induction ceremony on May 5, 2017, and acknowledged the unique challenges faced by working students who pursue their education through the Adult and Graduate Studies program. "Your presence and your commitment to do this are an indication of the value you place on your chosen field," he said. "This honor tonight is a recognition of human perseverance."

Mu Kappa Lambda is the Mars Hill University chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society devoted to the advancement of scholarship and to the recognition of nontraditional and adult students who are continuing their higher education. The society was established in 1945 and now exists in over 300 institutional chapters throughout the country.

To be eligible for induction into Mu Kappa Lambda, a student in Mars Hill's Adult and Graduate Studies program must have completed 24 hours of graded coursework, while maintaining a grade point average of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale and a position in the top 10 % of his or her class.
