Mountain Science Exploration

July 17-21, 2017 at Mars Hill University

LabMadison County (NC) and Mars Hill University are hosting a weeklong summer program for high school students. This camp includes activities to expose students to the ecology, natural resources, and outdoor recreation opportunities in western North Carolina. Educational activities include learning about diversity of plants and animals in the region, a citizen science project on the Appalachian Trail, and outdoor leadership.

Potential activities for the week...

  • Work with Appalachian Trail Conservancy identify, explore, and manage invasive species.
  • Learn about phenology and sample phenology plots along Appalachian Trail.
  • Sample salamander diversity and learn about stream ecosystems and water quality.
  • Measure trees and learn about forest management.
  • Bird banding and learn about wildlife habitat management.
  • Hiking, fishing, and whitewater rafting

The cost is $300; some scholarship funds are available to students needing financial assistance.
