When Bo Caldwell takes over as superintendent of Henderson County Public Schools on July 1, he'll continue a long-running connection between the school system and Mars Hill University. Caldwell will be the third leader of the school system to be a Mars Hill graduate, since the merger that formed Henderson County Schools in 1993.

Dan Lunsford, now president of Mars Hill University, oversaw the merger of Hendersonville City Schools and the former county system. A 1969 graduate of Mars Hill (then College), Lunsford became superintendent of the old Henderson County Schools in 1990 and served in that role for the merged system until 1999.

Current superintendent David Jones, who was appointed in 2010, is a 1978 Mars Hill alumnus. He's retiring from his position on June 30.

Caldwell, who served Henderson County Schools under both Lunsford's and Jones's tenures as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator, graduated from Mars Hill in 1984.
